Brief Discussion on Kwara State:

kwara state postal codes

Kwara State is located in Western Nigeria and part of North Central Nigeria and is bordered by Kogi State to the east, Niger State to the north, Ekiti, Osun, and Oyo states to the south, and Benin Republic to the west. Its capital city is Ilorin and it has 16 local government areas. Kwara is the ninth largest state in Nigeria in terms of area, but the sixth least populous, with an estimated population of around 3.2 million as of 2016.

The state has a varied geography, with the West Sudanian savanna in the west and the Guinean forest-savanna mosaic ecoregion in the rest of the state. There are several rivers in the state, including the Niger, which flows along the northern border and into Lake Jeba, and the Awun, Asa, Aluko, and Oyun rivers which flow through the interior.

The Kainji National Park is located in the northwest of the state and is home to various species such as grey heron, kob, hippopotamus, African bush elephant, olive baboon, and roan antelope, as well as some of the last remaining West African lions. The Old Oyo National Park in the southwest is home to crowned eagle, martial eagle, African buffalo, oribi, and patas monkey.

The majority of the people living in Kwara are Yoruba, but there are also significant populations of Nupe in the northeast, Bariba and Busa in the west, and a small number of Fulani in Ilorin. In the pre-colonial period, most of Kwara was part of the Oyo Empire, with the western portion being part of the Borgu Kingdoms and the northeast being part of the Nupe Kingdom.

During the mid-1800s, the Fulani jihad conquered some parts of the state and placed it under the Sokoto Caliphate’s Gwandu sphere. In the late 1800s and early 1900s, the British occupied the area and incorporated it into the Northern Nigeria Protectorate.

The Northern Nigeria Protectorate later merged with British Nigeria in 1914 and became independent as Nigeria in 1960. Kwara was originally a part of the Northern Region after independence, but it became the West Central State in 1967. The state was renamed Kwara in 1976 and has since undergone several changes due to state creation exercises in Nigeria.

The main industries in Kwara are agriculture, particularly coffee, cotton, groundnut, cocoa, oil palm, and kola nut crops, and services, particularly in Ilorin. The state also has a significant livestock industry, with cattle, goats, and sheep being raised and ranched. Kwara has a high Human Development Index compared to other states in Nigeria and has several institutions of tertiary education.
