A brief discussion of Enugu state:

Enugu State Postal Codes Search

Enugu State is located in the South-East region of Nigeria, bordered by Benue and Kogi to the north, Ebonyi to the east and southeast, Abia to the south, and Anambra to the west. It is the 29th largest state in terms of area and has a population of over 4.4 million people. The state is divided between the Niger Delta swamp forests in the south and the Guinean forest-savanna mosaic in the rest of the state. Important geographical features include the Udi-Nsukka Plateau and the Ekulu River.

Enugu State has a long history of habitation by various ethnic groups, particularly the Igbo, with smaller populations of Idoma and Igala in Etteh Uno. Prior to colonial rule, the area was part of the Kingdom of Nri and the Aro Confederacy. After the Anglo-Aro War, the British incorporated the area into the Southern Nigeria Protectorate and later merged it into British Nigeria in 1914. Enugu State became known for its anti-colonial resistance after the 1949 massacre of striking coal miners in the Iva Valley.

After Nigeria gained independence in 1960, the area became part of the Eastern Region. In May 1967, the region was split and the area became part of the East Central State. However, less than two months later, the former Eastern Region attempted to secede in the Nigerian Civil War, with Enugu State as part of the secessionist state of Biafra. The city of Enugu served as the Biafran capital until it was captured by federal forces in October 1967.

The rest of the state was heavily fought over, with much of it falling to federal forces by June 1968. After the war and the reunification of Nigeria, the East Central State was reformed until 1976, when Anambra State was created, including what is now Enugu State. In 1991, part of Anambra State was split off to form the new Enugu State, and in 1996, part of Enugu’s east was removed to become part of the new Ebonyi State.

Enugu State’s economy is primarily based on trade and services, as well as agriculture, including the production of yams, rice, cocoyam, oil palm, and cassava. The state was also home to a minor mining industry, particularly coal in the Udi Hills. Enugu State has a high Human Development Index and is considered the cultural center of the Igbo region.
