A brief discussion about Lagos state:
Lagos is the most populous and smallest state in Nigeria by area. Located in the southwestern part of the country, it is bordered by the Bight of Benin to the south and the international border with Benin to the west. Lagos only shares a border with Ogun State to the east and north. The state was created in 1967 from the Western Region and the former Federal Capital Territory. Lagos is named after the city of Lagos, which is the most populous city in Africa.
Geographically, Lagos is characterized by bodies of water, with nearly a quarter of the state being made up of lagoons, creeks, and rivers. The largest of these are the Lagos and Lekki lagoons, which are fed by the Ogun and Osun rivers. Other rivers and creeks flow throughout the state, serving as important transportation routes for people and goods.
The non-urbanized areas of the state are located in the tropical Nigerian lowland forests ecoregion, which is home to endangered species such as the mona monkey, tree pangolin, and hooded vulture. The state also has a transient population of African bush elephants. The offshore areas of Lagos are also biodiverse, with large fish populations, African manatees, and crocodiles.
Lagos has a diverse population, with the majority being Yoruba people. However, there are also Ewe and Ogu people in the western part of the state. There are also many non-native ethnic groups in Lagos, including Edo, Fulani, Hausa, Igbo, Ijaw, Ibibio, and Nupe people. The state also has a long-standing community of Syrian and Lebanese Nigerians, as well as recent immigrants from Benin, China, Ghana, India, Togo, and the United Kingdom. In terms of religion, about 55% of the population is Christian, 40% is Muslim, and the remaining 5% follow traditional ethnic religions or other religions.
In the pre-colonial period, the area that is now Lagos was mainly fishing villages and ports controlled by the Oyo and Benin Empires. In the 1800s, the city of Lagos became a major kingdom in its own right. In 1850, the British attacked and captured the kingdom in the Bombardment of Lagos, installing an ally as Oba and signing a treaty that placed Lagos under British protection. Ten years later, the Lagos Treaty of Cession established the Lagos Colony.
In 1906, the colony was incorporated into the Southern Nigeria Protectorate, which merged into British Nigeria in 1914 with the city of Lagos as its capital. Upon independence in 1960, Lagos remained the capital, with the Federal Capital Territory being formed from the city. The rest of modern-day Lagos was part of the Western Region until 1967, when the region was split and the area became Lagos State.
Economically, Lagos is an important state in Nigeria, serving as a major financial center. If it were a country, it would have one of the largest economies in Africa, with a GDP of $84 billion, similar to Ghana’s $75 billion, Angola’s $70 billion, and Ethiopia’s $93 billion. Lagos is also a key center for culture, education, and transportation in Nigeria and Sub-Saharan Africa. Despite facing challenges such as overcrowding and traffic, Lagos has the highest Human Development Index in Nigeria and is home to numerous developmental projects.
