Kogi State is located in the North Central region of Nigeria, and is bordered by ten other states: Ekiti and Kwara to the west, Federal Capital Territory to the north, Nasarawa to the northeast, Niger to the northwest, Edo and Ondo to the southwest, Anambra and Enugu to the southeast, and Benue to the east. It is the only state in Nigeria to share borders with so many other states.

The state gets its name from the Hausa word for river, “kogi,” and was created in 1991 from parts of Benue, Kwara, and Niger states. It is known as the “Confluence State” because the Niger and Benue rivers meet near the capital city, Lokoja. Kogi is the 13th largest state in Nigeria in terms of area and the 20th most populous, with an estimated population of around 4.5 million in 2016.

It is located within the tropical Guinean forest-savanna mosaic ecoregion, and is characterized by its key rivers, the Niger and the Benue, which meet in the state’s center and flow southward through it. The state is home to a diverse array of ethnic groups, including Ebira, Gbagyi, and Nupe (Bassa Nge, Kakanda, and Kupa subgroups) in the center, Agatu, Basa-Komo, Idoma, Igala, and Igbo in the east, and Yoruba (Okun, Ogori, Oworo, and Magongo subgroups) in the west.

The population is also religiously diverse, with about 45% being Muslim, 40% being Christian and the remaining 15% following traditional ethnic religions. The area now known as Kogi State was once divided among various states, some of which were small village-based states, while others, like the Nupe Kingdom, were part of larger empires.

The Nupe Kingdom held much of western Kogi State until it was annexed by the Fulani jihad in the early 1800s and placed under the Sokoto Caliphate. In the early 1900s and 1910s, the area was occupied by British expeditions and became part of the Northern Nigeria Protectorate, with its capital in Lokoja. The protectorate later merged into British Nigeria, and eventually gained independence as Nigeria in 1960.

Initially, Kogi State was part of the post-independence Northern Region, but in 1967 it became part of the North-Western State, Kwara State, and Benue-Plateau State. In 1976, western Benue State, southeastern Kwara State, and southern Niger State were broken off to form Kogi State.

Economically, Kogi State is primarily agricultural, with major crops including coffee, cashew, groundnut, cocoa, oil palm, and yam. The state also has industries in crude oil extraction and livestock herding of cattle, goats, and sheep. It has the 23rd highest Human Development Index and GDP in Nigeria.
