A brief discussion of Abia State:

Abia State Postal Codes Search

Abia State is located in the South-East region of Nigeria and is bordered by Enugu and Ebonyi states to the north and northeast, Imo State to the west, Akwa Ibom State to the southeast, Cross River State to the east, and Rivers State to the south. It was named after four of the most populous regions within the state: Aba, Bende, Isuikwuato, and Afikpo (although Afikpo later became a part of Ebonyi state in 1996). The capital of Abia is Umuahia, and the largest city and commercial center is Aba. The state has an estimated population of over 3.7 million and is the 32nd largest in area and 27th most populous.

Abia is divided between the swamp forests of the Niger Delta in the south and the drier Cross–Niger transition forests, with some savanna in the rest of the state. The Imo and Aba Rivers flow along the western and southern borders of the state, respectively. The state has been inhabited by various ethnic groups for many years, but is predominantly inhabited by the Igbo people.

In the pre-colonial period, Abia was part of the Aro Confederacy based in Arochukwu, but the confederacy was defeated by British troops in the Anglo-Aro War in the early 1900s. After the war, the area was incorporated into the Southern Nigeria Protectorate, which later merged into British Nigeria. Abia became a center of anti-colonial resistance with the Women’s War that started in Oloko.

After Nigeria gained independence in 1960, Abia was part of the Eastern Region until 1967, when it became part of the East Central State. However, less than two months later, the former Eastern Region attempted to secede during the three-year Nigerian Civil War, with Abia being part of the secessionist state of Biafra. At the end of the war and for the reunification of Nigeria, the East Central State was merged until 1976, when Imo State (including present-day Abia) was formed by the Murtala Muhammed regime. Fifteen years later, Imo State was divided, with the eastern part becoming the old Abia State. In 1996, a part of Abia’s northeast was removed to form a part of the new Ebonyi State.

Abia’s economy is centered around the production of crude oil and natural gas, as well as agriculture, including the cultivation of yams, maize, taro, oil palm, and cassava. Manufacturing is also an important minor industry in the state, particularly in and around Aba. Abia has a fast-growing population and is experiencing industrialization, and it has the joint-eighth highest Human Development Index in the country.
